But, if you go talk to the ruler and ask to leave you'll still lose the rep, guessing it's a bug.
Magistrates – +1 influence for ruler clan; +1 security for towns; town taxes reduced by 5%. King’s Mercenaries – ruler gains double influence from mercenaries; non-ruler clans gain 10% less

For every 1 point of influence you get x amount of money. It does not convert all at once tho. You can abuse this by picking up recruits and donating them to garrison for influences. (20 denar for 0.66 influence) and/or donate looters to the dungeon. I made 50k in like 1 hour by just doing this. Wow great tip!
Especially the T4 Crossbowmen. There's 4 perks, 2 to reduce hiring costs and 2 to reduce wages (and they are all in between levels 150 and 225, with the 225 one being in trade). They have 50% higher base upgrade costs, and with the upgrade reduction cost perk they're still more expensive to upgrade than regular troops.
The mercenary option is usually only available in the beginning of the game to help you join a faction without having much renown, or when a faction is at war with 2 or 3 others. If you ask a Crimean noble where the Khan is, and they respond "I don't know," it means that the Khan was defeated in battle and will re-spawn in probably two weeks
Go into the kingdom tab, then click Leave Kingdom. That'll give you tons of -rep, though. For whatever reason, mercenary contracts never need to be renewed. You're stuck being an mercenary unless you want to take the -20 rep hit.
PSA: Being a paid mercenary is the shit. My usual playstyle was to be independent just long enough to earn a lordship, and then play the vassal game before inevitably striking out on my own to form a kingdom. This time, however, I decided to become a mercenary, rather than jump straight for the first fief that was offered to me.
